What GPU do you need to make your own AI avatar locally with EchoMimicV3?

By GraphicCardPrices. Requirements checked against the official EchoMimicV3 documentation on .

This guide is for streamers, educators and small businesses who want a talking avatar for videos without uploading their face and voice to an online avatar service.

EchoMimicV3 from Ant Group animates a portrait from an audio clip: you give it one image and a recording, and it produces a video of that person speaking, with lip movement matched to the audio. It is a 1.3B-parameter model built on Wan 2.1-Fun, so it is small enough for a single consumer card.

License note: the README says the models are licensed under Apache 2.0, which permits commercial use. Only animate faces and voices you have permission to use.

What GPU do you need?

The official README says: "12G VRAM Requirement." (source)

How to get started

  1. Make or pick your avatar image first: a clear, front-facing portrait works best. Record the script you want the avatar to say.
  2. On Linux, create a Python 3.10 environment, install the repository's requirements and download the weights listed in the README (the Wan 2.1-Fun 1.3B base model, an audio encoder and the EchoMimicV3 weights).
  3. Run run_flash.sh for the Flash model, or app_mm.py for the quantized Gradio app in your browser. On Windows, the README points to a one-click package for the quantized version.
  4. The README suggests 5 sampling steps for a talking head and setting partial_video_length to 81, 65 or smaller to reduce VRAM use.

Things to check before you buy

NVIDIA, AMD and Intel

The README's tested setup is CentOS 7.2 or Ubuntu 22.04 with "Cuda >= 12.1", on A100 (80G), RTX 4090D (24G) and V100 (16G) GPUs. AMD and Intel GPUs are not mentioned, so the price table above covers NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards.

System RAM

The README gives no system memory figure. The quantized and ComfyUI routes are the documented ways to fit smaller cards; check that you have room for the downloaded weights as well.

Speed

The README does not publish timings for consumer cards, and we have not benchmarked it. Clip length and resolution (up to 768x768 for Flash) both affect render time and memory.

Want a still avatar instead?

If you only need a profile picture, an image model in ComfyUI is enough, and you can then animate that image here.

EchoMimicV3 questions

How much VRAM does EchoMimicV3 need?

The official README lists a 12G VRAM requirement for EchoMimicV3-Flash and says the quantized Gradio app needs 12G. It also says EchoMimicV3 can run on 16G of VRAM using ComfyUI, and its tested GPUs include an RTX 4090D with 24G.

Does EchoMimicV3 work on AMD or Intel GPUs?

The README only documents NVIDIA GPUs with CUDA 12.1 or newer. It does not mention AMD or Intel support, so check community reports before buying a non-NVIDIA card for it.

Is EchoMimicV3 free for commercial use?

The README says the models are licensed under Apache 2.0, which allows commercial use. You still need permission from anyone whose face or voice you animate.
