This guide is for indie game developers, modders and hobbyists who want to turn a concept image into a 3D model on their own PC, without paying for a cloud service or credits.
Hunyuan3D 2.1 is Tencent's open image-to-3D system. It works in two stages: a shape model (3.3B parameters) builds the mesh from your image, then a texture model (2B parameters) paints physically based materials onto it. You get a textured mesh you can clean up in Blender and bring into a game engine.
License note: the weights ship under the Tencent Hunyuan 3D 2.1 Community License. Its territory excludes the European Union, the United Kingdom and South Korea, and products with more than 1 million monthly active users must request a separate license from Tencent. Read the license file before using assets commercially.
What GPU do you need?
The official README says: "It takes 10 GB VRAM for shape generation, 21GB for texture generation and 29GB for shape and texture generation in total." (source)
| Tier | VRAM | What it runs | Example cards |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 10 GB | Shape generation only: an untextured mesh you texture yourself. source | RTX 3060 (12GB version), RTX 5070, RTX 4070 SUPER |
| Comfortable | 21 GB | Meets the texture-generation figure, but stays below the 29 GB total for both stages together. source | RTX 3090, RTX 4090 |
| Best | 29 GB | Shape and texture generation in one run, as the README measures it. source | RTX 5090 |
Lowest recorded prices by tier
The cheapest New and Used listings we have recorded for each tier, among NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards with at least that much VRAM. Used includes renewed and refurbished cards. Each is a recorded Amazon US price, not a live checkout price; the model page shows every listing and its condition.

|---|---|---|
| Minimum (10GB+) | $459.99 RTX 3060 12GB Recorded 2026-10-26 22:50:21 UTC | $409.99 RTX 3060 12GB Recorded 2026-10-27 05:05:55 UTC |

How to get started
- Install Python 3.10 and PyTorch 2.5.1 built for CUDA 12.4 (the versions the README was tested with), then install the repository's requirements.
- Build the two texture components the README lists: the custom rasterizer and the mesh painter, then download the RealESRGAN upscaler checkpoint it names.
- Start the included Gradio app to work in a browser tab. The README shows a
--low_vram_modeflag for it, but does not say how much memory that flag saves. - Prefer node workflows? The README links a community ComfyUI node for 2.1. It is not maintained by Tencent.
Full instructions are in the official Hunyuan3D 2.1 repository.
Things to check before you buy
NVIDIA, AMD and Intel
The README says Hunyuan3D 2.1 "supports Macos, Windows, Linux", and its tested setup uses a CUDA 12.4 PyTorch build. It does not document AMD or Intel GPU support, so the price table above only covers NVIDIA GeForce RTX cards.
Less than 10 GB?
The older Hunyuan3D 2.0 README states: "It takes 6 GB VRAM for shape generation and 16 GB for shape and texture generation in total." It is the earlier release, but it is the documented option for 8GB cards.
System RAM
Neither README gives a system memory figure. Plan for the model downloads and Blender running at the same time, and check your free disk space before you start.
Speed and alternatives
We have not benchmarked Hunyuan3D, and the README gives no consumer-GPU timings. If you want an MIT-licensed alternative, Microsoft's TRELLIS.2 README states: "An NVIDIA GPU with at least 24GB of memory is necessary." It is only tested on Linux.
Hunyuan3D 2.1 questions
How much VRAM does Hunyuan3D 2.1 need?
The official README says it takes 10 GB of VRAM for shape generation, 21GB for texture generation and 29GB for shape and texture generation in total. A 12GB card covers the untextured mesh; doing both stages together needs a 32GB card such as the RTX 5090.
Can I run Hunyuan3D on an 8GB GPU?
Not version 2.1 by its own figures. The older Hunyuan3D 2.0 README states 6 GB of VRAM for shape generation and 16 GB for shape plus texture, so an 8GB card can make 2.0 meshes without textures.
Can I sell game assets made with Hunyuan3D 2.1?
The Tencent Hunyuan 3D 2.1 Community License does not cover the European Union, the United Kingdom or South Korea, and very large products need a separate license. Read the license file in the official repository before selling assets.
